This is your "paper" collection and  will contain everything from printed photos, photo albums, magnetic albums, scrapbooks, memorabilia, kids artwork, artifacts, trophies & medals, awards & documents, report cards and so on.  Your overall goal for your this collection is to sort and organize so you can determine what needs to be digitized and stored with your digital collection, and what needs to be saved and archived.  

Remember all those videos you took of your family events in the 90's and 2000's? They are rapidly deteriorating. Get them transferred to a video file that can be viewed on your computer or burned to a DVD.

Managing our digital photos is completely different and certainly more complicated that managing our printed photos.  Get rid of duplicates, use a digital photo hub and backup, back, backup!
